reviews:

"This trio is another product of cross-overs between international prodigies in the worlds of improvised music and jazz, this time a saxophonist from the Netherlands, a pianist from Russia and a drummer from Germany. Houtkamp is known as an expressive saxophonist in style and as an ensemble leader who works with groups trying to faze over the margins that exist between composition and improvisation, in order to emphasize the full gamut of the continuum between them rather than the seeming differences. Nabatov is a remarkable pianist and composer who conceives new forms and pursues new links with historical formulae including those evidently from mainstream and classical influences. Blume is a truly creative drummer and his punctuation is a catalyst to the musical developments around him.
Luc Houtkamp supports stylistic freedom and his particular bravura is based around the manner in which the musicians relate to each other when playing – musical expression comes before pure ‘style’. Martin Blume is so sensitive that at times he seems to have disappeared. He listens carefully, so is fully focused: he is more attentive to playing in harmony than he is to his own rhythmic vigor. Simon Nabatov’s piano too is extremely sensitive, though seldom seemingly absent from the field of play. He has been learning since the age of three and has a very broad experience which has no doubt led him to be a listener first. That experience includes such diverse talents as Arthur Blythe, Mark Feldman, Steve Lacy and Phil Minton.
Encounters is an altogether charismatic album of multi-faceted, profound sensitivity, executed with absolute aplomb. It is unequivocally enchanting.

"Musically, I have many things to thank Leo Feigin for. One of them is that well over fifteen years ago he turned me on to Simon Nabatov. Amongst my friends my liking for pianists is well known: Cecil Taylor, Keith Tippett, Marilyn Crispell, Jaki Byard, Geri Allen, Aki Takase (and of course) Monk, Duke and Bill Evans are all essential listening. Simon Nabatov, the youngest of all those listed here, is hardly a young turk, merely a middle-aged Russian, though a striking figure for all that. To my real regret Mr Nabatov is not well known in the UK, even among the people who matter. This is nonsensical because he is quite simply one of the finest improvising pianists in Europe. Conception, technique and understanding of jazz improvisation (he has recorded a whole album based on the work of pioneer pianist Herbie Nicols) places him among the leading figures in contemporary jazz piano. Simon Nabatov is not an also-ran.
Four years ago Nabatov’s recording ‘Roundup’ (Leo CD LR 586) took up a massive space in my home and head. It lived with me for months. I could not stop listening to it, to the extent that I felt quietly confident it was going to be his breakthrough recording. Even now I still have the sleeve on display rather than tucked away within my collection. I fear ‘Encounters’ is going to have the same affect on me. Surely this time it won’t just be me, Leo Feigin and a stray dog listening to the CD in the garden shed. The BBC will pick up on it, UK promoters will want him at major festivals, the Royal Academy is bound to invite him to perform a masterclass.
Like ‘Roundup’, ‘Encounters’ involves other significant musicians; ‘Roundup’, a quintet, ‘Encounters’ a trio. But whereas ‘Roundup’ was largely jazz composition percolated through the art of improvisation, ‘Encounters’ is a series of spontaneous compositions coming to the surface without prior planning. If you are not used to this way of approaching music do not let the description put you off. Simon Nabatov, alongside the Dutchman, Luc Houtkamp, saxophones, and German drummer, Martin Blume are approachable, there is a performance going on here that draws you in, like a story where you want to know what happens. 𠆎ncounters’ is not ‘easy listening’, on the other hand the trio invent avenues for the ears. The opening gambit to these ‘Encounters’ is called ‘running’; from the beginning there is a sense of high drama. It’s like: “Get hold of this, and we can take you somewhere exciting, a place where you’ve never been before.” And as the piano piles up against the ringing percussion and Houtkamp’s tenor saxophone calls out to a time and space I can only guess at, yes, I believe I’m in the ‘encounter’ too."

'Encounters', ontmoetingen in goed Nederlands, getuigt ervan.

"If you’re a fan of Ivo Perelman, you’ll be in heaven with Luc Houtkamp/ts-as, Simon Nabatov/p and Martin Blume/dr, who sear through eight free flying originals with fierce abandon. Reckless abandon with a wide as the grand canyon vibrato and searing honks and shrieks lead to cataclysmic crescendos on the 18 mnute “Running” and the barrage of “Meeting”. A rapid piano staccato attack teams up with a relentless ride cymbal on “Stumbling” and rustling through the woods turns to a raucous arm wrestling match on “Confronting (the) Part One” before it turns into a shouting match that is almost Wagnerian on “Confronting (the) part 2”. No one comes up for air on this one!"

Reiner Kobe, Jazzpodium 9/2015.
